It opened with a drum line, playing along the sparkling catwalk, almost to the beat of carefully placed steps in stiletto heels. Reflections bounced from shiny instruments, to performer’s costumes, and off of jewel-emblazoned lingerie. In true Victoria’s Secret fashion (pun intended), some of the most contagious pop music artists were on hand to lend their musical talents as a background for the sultry and flirty theme of the night. Keep reading to hear who was there, what I loved and what the angels were wearing on one of the most anticipated nights on television!
This year’s show began with music from Fall Out Boy and their chart topping single “Light ‘Em Up”. And light ’em up, Candice Swanepoel did..in the $10 million bra of the year complete with 4,200 jewels. This year’s ultimate angel honor, which has previously been held by the likes of Adriana, Alessandra and Miranda, was gilded in 18-karat gold and 2,000 diamonds. As lovely as she looked, another model who absolutely shined was newly engaged Behati Prinsloo (and her fiancé Adam Levine who was watching proudly from a front row seat). And then there was the princess of social media herself, Miss Cara Delevingne who rocked an open-front soccer uniform (soccer ball sold separately).
Just when you think Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show costumes have thought of everything, headlining performer Taylor Swift proved that she can rock a variety of accessories, heels and a train with the best of them. Her Union Jack-themed costume and top had was an excellent nod to the fact that she can conquer everything from country music to your heart.
I also loved the way designers played with color this year. From Karlie Kloss’ watercolor butterfly costume, to the display of brightly colored lingerie over and under playful costumes, the sky was the limit (and possibly the inspiration) for this year’s exhibition. There was a Daenerys Targaryen-inspired rocker chick, new mom Lily Aldridge as a Braveheart-looking motorcycle maven, smoldering yet ethereal styles stepping to A Great Big World’s “Say Something” and a cute cutaway to the angels describing the best and worst parts about hypothetically stranded on a deserted island.
Finally, the holiday 2013 commercial was unveiled and the theme “Night In Paris” was everything a Victoria’s Secret holiday ad should be. As one of the angels said (and I concur), “I can’t believe you guys still have ideas left!” It was luminous, it was magical and much like the Eiffel Tower (which Victoria’s Secret paid to keep lit all night long during the shoot), it sparkled.
In the fashion world, fashion shows are meant to highlight the best of what’s to come and if this show was any indication, 2014 is going to be a year to shine, to smolder and to, (as experienced model Lais explained) smile even if you fall.
