Monday Must Haves: Spring Trends 2015

As of Friday, March 20th, 2015, we can officially say that spring is here. No one is more excited than me, except maybe everyone else in Boston who has enured a record season of 108.6″ of snow this year. With spring comes spring cleaning and undoubtedly a clean sweep of your wardrobe. For twenty-somethings this often means updating and upgrading pieces you’ve held on to from college (or earlier) to dress like the chic and sophisticated go-getter that you are.

These runway trends are ready-to-wear.

Keep reading for more on some key pieces from the runway that  I’m loving for spring!

Gingham

It seems as though fashion is slowly becoming more conscious of the power of versatility and gingham has history of just that. Made famous by the 60’s-mod originators, the fabric itself has no right or wrong side so bonus points to you if you find a reversible piece.

Shoulders

Is it me or does it seem that the warmer the season, the longer the hemline? Think about it: wool mini skirts for winter, swishy maxi skirts in summer. This leads me to believe that each season aspires to highlight one of more parts of your silhouette. Apparently this year is focused on shoulders so dare to bare.

70’s chic

Wide leg, fringe and a bit of bohemia are in order for spring this year. (Question: When are they not?) To make this trend more practical for everyday, use pieces in moderation like high waisted jeans with a crop top and flower crown or wide legs pants with a simple pocket tee and high top sneakers.

Stripes

It’s a small statement that requires very little work to be stylish. Whether worn on top or on bottom,  stripes are a closet basic that can be nautical or preppy, sophisticated or sporty. Compliment pieces such as linen pants, joggers or an A-line skirt define the look and take you from simple to chic.

Animal Print

Here’s a pattern that takes a little bit of boldness to pull off. Start small with accessories and work your way up to bigger pieces that really roar. (Sorry, I had to.) Maxi dresses, statement wedges and workout wear are all fabulous ways to build a look using this trend.

Safari

Similar to animal print but not limited to just cheetah spots or zebra stripes, safari is all about texture and functionality. Without going so far as to recommend the cargo of yore (circa the 1990’s), a few strategically placed pockets on khaki or olive skinny-leg pants, patterns mimicking palm fronds, bamboo or vines and the ever-classic tortoise all make for good accents.

I’ve said it before but the workout to everyday wear thing that’s happening right now is kind of fantastic. I mean, if you’re telling me that it can look like I went to barre, maybe picked up a power breakfast and my dry cleaning and it’s only just 9am when I really just woke up, threw on a pair of joggers, laced up some trainers and ran into you at Starbucks then sign me up for all the outfits.
